Recognize Issues With Your HVAC System

Your HVAC system takes a beating year-round, and which is why it’s important to stay attuned to its performance. An underperforming air conditioner or furnace results in discomfort and higher energy bills, and in the worst-case scenario, costly repairs or even replacement. While some HVAC problems are easily detectable, others aren’t, and some problems are just a matter of improved routine maintenance. Here are some signs of an inefficient HVAC system and what you can do to restore comfort and lower your energy bills.

Higher Energy Bills

If your energy bills are skyrocketing, your HVAC system is working harder than it needs to, and your home isn’t feeling any warmer or cooler, you may have a problem. As the system runs and runs to maintain the desired temperature, it will be reflected in your gas and electric bills. A couple of things that you can do is to check around your house to make sure there aren’t any windows or doors that could use some weatherstripping to seal cracks and leaks. You can also check with your energy providers to see if there were any rate adjustments you were unaware of. If neither of those solves the problem, then call an HVAC professional.

Thermostat Issues

Faulty thermostats are behind a surprising percentage of HVAC problems. If the thermostat isn’t working properly, it will heavily tax your HVAC system. The first thing to try is replacing the thermostat batteries. If that doesn’t work, then you might need to replace the thermostat. The lifespan of a thermostat is about 10 years and with the new smart thermostats, you can program them to keep your home perfectly comfortable and reduce your energy costs.

Dirty Filters

Dirty filters impede the airflow through your HVAC system and introduce dirt, dust, and pollen into your home. A quick check of the air filter will show you if it needs to be changed. Set up a reminder system to replace your HVAC air filters at the manufacturer’s recommended intervals. (If you have a smart thermostat, you can program it to remind you to change the filters.)

Drainage Problems

A blocked condensation line will not drain properly and affect the performance of your HVAC system. Even worse, the moisture can breed mold and bacteria, which are health hazards. Not to mention that it can cause structural damage to your home. If you see standing water around the drainage area for your HVAC system, call a professional to diagnose and repair the problem.
