No matter how old your furnace is, it can develop problems. Typically a furnace should be quiet with a few noises here and there but there are other noises that are warning signals for furnace maintenance or replacement. Listed below are a few noises indicating it may be time for a new furnace.

Rattling

If the furnace is making a rattling noise while running, this could mean the cover panels have become loose, tighten them. If you still here rattling noises after call a qualified technician to come inspect the furnace. The blower may be out of alignment or a malfunction in the motor occurred.

Repeated Clicking

Although clicking noises are normal when the furnace is turned on and off, repeat clicking sounds coming from the control panel or outside compressor is not normal. This could mean a relay is defective or an electrical control could be causing the relay to break down.

Grinding

If the blower is making a grinding noise, shut off the furnace and call a technician. This noise could mean the motor’s bearings need replacement. Usually the belt needs realignment or is worn out and needs replacement.

Squealing

This noise typically occurs when the belt that connects the motor to the fan slipped or even needs to be replaced. If not replaced they can brake and cause your blower to stop turning.
