The worst possible circumstance during the dead of the winter in Central Ohio is having your heat go out. Heating outages can have many causes, a power outage during a snow or ice storm, malfunctioning heating elements in your furnace or heat pump, or a power issue in your home. Sometimes, no heat can be traced to a simple fix like a dirty air filter or blown circuit, Whatever the case, here are some strategies for keeping warm until heat is restored.

Turn off the heat

Shut your furnace or heat pump off. This not only saves energy but, in some instances, such as with a gas-powered furnace, can be a safety issue as well.

Light the fireplace

If you have a wood-burning fireplace, now is the time to light it up. (Don’t do this if your heat is out due to a natural gas issue.) If a power outage isn’t the problem, turn on some space heaters and follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for safe use.

Bundle up in layers

Throw on the sweaters, socks, thermal underwear, and any other clothing you need to stay warm. Grab blankets and comforts off the beds to bundle up in.

Drink warm beverages

Sip on some hot coffee, cocoa, or tea. Not only will it warm you up but can surprisingly help calm you during this stressful situation.
