How to Deal With A Furnace Emergency

- Tips
A furnace failure in the middle of winter can be frustrating and frightening. It’s important to remain calm and try to figure out what’s going on, so you can properly deal with the situation.
Here are some tips on what to do if your furnace goes out.
Assess Safety
If you smell natural gas or burning, get everybody out of the house (go to your car or a neighbor’s house) and call 911 and your local gas company. It’s essential to seal off a gas or carbon monoxide leak before anybody gets hurt. Once first responders have declared your home safe to enter, you can call an HVAC company.
Check Your Filter
A clogged filter can cause your furnace to malfunction because the air flow is slowed, causing your furnace to work overtime to distribute air through your house. Make sure you have a clean filter installed to ensure that you furnace is working properly.
Check the Thermostat
If the thermostat is faulty or your smart thermostat is having programming issues, that may be the problem. In that case, the HVAC technician will replace the thermostat and wait and see if the furnace kicks back on. If it does, you’re good to go.
Shut Off Your Furnace
If you’ve verified that the thermostat is working and there are no gas or carbon monoxide leaks, turn your furnace off until help arrives. This saves the components of your furnace from unnecessary wear and tear and prevents damage to working parts of your furnace.
Bundle Up
Dress in layers and bundle up in blankets until a repairman arrives. Sipping on hot beverages will help you stay warm.
