Tips for preparing your A/C for fall and winter

How to Prep Your A/C for Fall and Winter

As the weather cools down, your air conditioner gets a well-deserved break. But just because you won’t be using it for the next few months doesn’t mean you should forget about it. Preparing your A/C for fall and winter helps extend its lifespan, keeps it running efficiently, and reduces the chances of costly repairs when warm weather returns. Here’s how to make sure your system is ready for the off-season.

Replace the Air Filter

Before switching from A/C to Furnace for cold weather season, check the air filter. A dirty filter reduces airflow, puts strain on your system, and can spread dust throughout your home. Swapping it out for a fresh one ensures your air handler is free of contaminants for winter heating.

Clear Away Debris

Fallen leaves, twigs, and dirt often build up around your outdoor unit in the fall. Clear a two-foot area around the condenser to prevent blockages and ensure good airflow. This also helps keep pests from nesting inside during the winter.

Inspect and Clean the Coils

Dirty coils force your system to work harder. A gentle rinse with a hose (never high pressure) can remove dirt and dust. Make sure the unit is off before cleaning, and let it dry completely.

Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

Fall is the perfect time to schedule preventive A/C and Furnace maintenance with an HVAC professional. A technician can check refrigerant levels, electrical connections, and overall performance. Catching small issues now can prevent bigger (and more expensive) problems next spring.

Check Thermostat Settings

Switch your thermostat from cooling to heating mode and set it to a comfortable fall/winter temperature. If you don’t already have a programmable or smart thermostat, this may be a good time to upgrade for better efficiency year-round.
