Types of Water Purification Systems
Hard water that is distributed from municipal water systems can cause a multitude of problems for your home’s plumbing system. Hard water can leave a build-up of mineral deposits in your pipes which can lead to slow drains and clogs, encourage the formation of rust and film on your appliances and household surfaces, and cause other problems. It is particularly problematic for your water heater. While drinking or bathing in hard water won’t harm your health, some people find that it has a metallic or chemical taste and it also doesn’t always rinse your laundry thoroughly, leaving soap scum on your clothes and linens. If you want to improve the quality of the water flowing into your household, consider a whole-house water purification system.
Here are some common types of water purification systems:
Water Softeners
The process of ion exchange is more commonly known as "water softening". In this process, hard water passes through a filter that exchanges the ions. Minerals such as calcium and magnesium will attach to resins in the filter and be exchanged for sodium ions.
Reverse Osmosis
Water is forced, at pressure, through a membrane which removes dissolved minerals. The impurities remain in the filter, allowing the purified water to flow through.
Activated Charcoal
These filters include granules of charcoal which absorb impurities in the water and allow clean water to flow out. One benefit of activated charcoal filters is that they improve the taste and odor of the water.
Ultraviolet Filters
UV filters use ultraviolet light to sterilize the water and primarily remove bacteria and viruses. It’s important to note that you will need to use another type of filter in conjunction with a UV filter to remove minerals and chemicals.
