Why is my AC blowing warm air?
- March 26, 2025
- Tips
It never fails. Some unseasonably warm spring temperatures send you to the thermostat to turn on the AC and nothing but hot air pours through the vents. It’s frustrating, but the good thing is that you are noticing it now, and not in the middle of June when temps reach into the 80s and HVAC technicians are fully booked. There are several reasons why you’re A/C isn’t working properly, including the following:
Non-functioning thermostat
First, ensure your thermostat is set to “cool” and a temperature lower than the room’s current temperature—it’s an easy oversight after winter. If that’s not the issue, try replacing the thermostat batteries. If the problem persists, consider upgrading to a smart thermostat. It can automate temperature adjustments, keeping your home comfortable while saving energy. Plus, it provides maintenance reminders, like when to change filters.
Dirty Filters
You would be surprised by how much a dirty air filter can impact the performance of your HVAC system. Typically, filters should be changed every three months, but more frequently if you live in an especially dusty area or have family members who suffer from allergies. Get into the habit of changing the HVAC filters regularly.
Refrigerant Leaks
Refrigerant works with the system’s evaporator coil to absorb and release heat in the AC, which allows the unit to cool your home. Wear and tear, along with age, can cause coils and other components of the AC unit to leak. When that happens, the indoor coil can’t absorb the heat, which causes warm air to blow through the vents.
Evaporator Coils
The evaporator coil in your A/C can freeze, which usually means it’s not getting enough airflow because it’s either dirty or the filter needs changing. Staying on top of changing the filters can prevent evaporator coil freeze. A frozen or dirty evaporator coil needs the attention of a skilled HVAC professional.
Compressor/Electrical
Your AC’s compressor circulates the refrigerant in the unit. If it’s not working properly, then the AC is unable to cool the air. In this case, you’ll need an HVAC technician to diagnose and fix or replace the compressor.
