Benefits of Leak Location Services

There is nothing more frustrating than having a water leak and not knowing where it’s coming from. The first tip-off is an increased water bill. The second indication is if you see or smell mold and mildew or a dank musty smell in your basement, bathroom, or laundry room. Or, if it’s an outdoor leak, you may notice muddy, soggy patches in your yard. It’s easy to see a leaky faucet, but what if you know there’s a problem, but can’t figure out how to fix it? This is where a leak location service can help. Previously, leak detection was a messy process that even extended to digging up your lawn or pulling down drywall to look for a leaky pipe. These days, a leak location is conducted by a plumber who will use the latest technology to isolate the problem without causing major property damage.

Types of Leak Locators

Mechanical

With mechanical leak location, an impeller counts the number of gallons of water that pass through it. The count is conducted at various times of the day to get a comparison between peak and off-peak usage. When the system detects water usage during a time that doesn’t fit into the consumption pattern, then the leak can be traced.

Ultrasonic

Ultrasonic leak location uses ultrasonic waves and sound to find leaks. The plumber can listen to the waves that are tracking the water flow for unusual sounds, such as hissing to detect pressure points in the line. The sound is transformed into signals, which the plumber can trace by volume, and then precisely pinpoint the source of the leak.

Thermal Cameras

A thermal camera uses heat detection technology to identify the source of the leak in walls or ceilings. The plumber can visualize the source of the leak from the heat signature that is picked up from the water that is leaking from the pipe.
