Energy Efficient HVAC Upgrades for Your Home

If you’re tired of soaring energy bills, you’re not alone. Many regions of the nation have experienced steadily increasing costs for electricity and natural gas over the past years, but you can fight back! There are many steps you can take — many at reasonable price points — to improve energy efficiency in your home and reduce your energy bills. Explore some of these options before the chill of winter or searing heat of summer take full effect.

Zone Temperature Controls

Perhaps you have cold or hot spots in your home, those areas that you just can’t adequately heat or cool, no matter what, resulting in higher energy bills, but no noticeable improvement in comfort. A ductless mini-split is like a small AC unit or heater that you can install in specific areas (zones) of your home. The unit attaches to the wall and operates just like an air conditioner or furnace. You can turn them on and off as needed. Having temperature zones in your home can significantly reduce the stress on your existing HVAC system and, consequently, your heating and cooling bills.

Smart Thermostats

An old, sluggish thermostat won’t accurately control the temperature, leaving you uncomfortable, frustrated, and paying more to heat or cool your home. Replace your worn-out thermostat with a programmable smart thermostat. You can adjust the temperature to be warmer or cooler during the day when nobody is home and then tell the thermostat to raise or lower the temperature before everybody gets home. Your family will walk into a comfortable home, and you didn’t waste money heating or cooling an empty house during the day. You can program and control the thermostat from your phone.

Energy-Efficient Appliances

Older appliances can eat up a huge chunk of your electricity bill. Why not pull the plug on these old dinosaurs and replace them with sleek, energy-efficient appliances. Look for Energy Star®-rated appliances which will offer modern features, improved performance, and lower operating costs. You may be able to take advantage of manufacturers’ rebates or even receive tax credits on a new furnace, air conditioner & heat pump.

Insulation

You would be surprised how much warm and cool air can escape your home due to insufficient insulation. Some problem areas include the attic, crawl spaces, and around windows and doors. If it’s time to replace or boost your insulation, check the recommended R-factor for your area. You can also pick-up weather-stripping tape to seal gaps around windows or doors at a hardware or big box store or online.
